Use the pumpkin gutter to thin the pumpkin walls |

One key to carving finer details is to make the pumpkin wall as thin as possible. The pumpkin works great for that. After all the guts have been removed you can really scrap the wall thinner with the gutter. You only need to thin the front of the pumpkin that will be carved.

Make sure you bring your pumpkin indoors if the temperature dips below freezing. But, if you're too late and your pumpkin becomes shriveled, you can always soak your pumpkin in a bucket of water for up to 8 hours to revive it. When you remove the pumpkin from the water, drain it for 30 minutes before you dry it off. |

Carve out the bottom |

Rather than carve out the lid or stem of the pumpkin, I have found that carving a hole at the bottom of the pumpkin works and looks better. You can simply place the pumpkin over the light, rather than sticking it inside the pumpkin and replacing the top each night.
